Use antivirus software that works. Antivirus software should be fine tuned to scan incoming email and files from different locations. It should have predefined actions on how to handle detected viruses. The software should have regular deep scans scheduled for your hard drive to look for dormant and new viruses.
In addition ensure your annual subscription has not lapsed. If it has you will not receive the benefits of the latest virus definition updates and you will be highly venerable to new threats.
